Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl

Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl

Posted by ALANA ADOLFO on

The Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl is a popular Medical Medium recipe that combines five key ingredients: wild blueberries, spirulina, coriander, barley grass juice powder, and Atlantic dulse. Each ingredient is included for a specific purpose, with all five working together to provide combined benefits.

What Is the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl?

The Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl is based on the original Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie, using the same ingredients in a pudding-style recipe. Medical Medium notes that the recipe helps remove toxic heavy metals, including mercury, lead, aluminium, and cadmium, which can build up in the body over time.

Instead of being served as a drink, this version replaces banana with mango and adds optional strawberries and honey, creating a thick, creamy texture that can be eaten with a spoon. Toppings are also added to complete the bowl. Aside from these changes, the main ingredients and benefits of the Heavy Metal Detox recipe remain the same.

The Five Key Ingredients

Let us look at each ingredient individually to explore how the recipe works. Below is a breakdown based on Medical Medium’s descriptions.

Wild Blueberries

Wild blueberries have many different properties from cultivated blueberries. According to Medical Medium, wild blueberries have a detoxifying effect, drawing heavy metals out of the brain and body. Wild blueberries are consumed in several forms: fresh, frozen, as pure wild blueberry juice, or as pure wild blueberry powder.

Barley Grass Juice Powder

Medical Medium states that barley grass juice powder draws metals from the spleen, intestinal tract, pancreas, thyroid, and reproductive system. It works in close coordination with both spirulina and coriander.

It’s important to note that this recipe calls for barley grass juice powder, not barley grass powder. While both come from young barley grass, barley grass juice powder is made by cold-pressing the grass to extract the juice, then drying it into a powder. Barley grass powder, on the other hand, is made by dehydrating barley grass and then grinding it into a powder.

Spirulina

The Medical Medium explains how spirulina works together with barley grass juice powder and coriander in the recipe: barley grass juice powder prepares heavy metals for absorption, while spirulina soaks up the metals extracted by barley grass juice powder.

Spirulina has a naturally strong, earthy flavour that can take some getting used to. If you’re new to spirulina, you may prefer to start with a smaller amount and gradually increase it over time.

Coriander

Fresh coriander is an essential ingredient in the Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox recipe. Medical Medium says that coriander is capable of extracting older heavy metals from the body, while also helping remove metals from the brain, liver, other organs, and the intestinal tract. This recipe uses one tightly packed cup of fresh coriander leaves.

Atlantic Dulse

Atlantic dulse is a red seaweed and also an important ingredient in the Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox recipe. According to Medical Medium, it binds to heavy metals, including mercury, and holds onto them until they leave the body. The recipe can be made with Atlantic dulse flakes or a liquid extract.

The Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl Recipe

Recipe sourced from Medical Medium. Serves 1.

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups fresh or frozen mango

  • 2 cups frozen or fresh wild blueberries, OR 2 oz pure wild blueberry juice, OR 2 tbsp organic wild blueberry powder

  • ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries (optional)

  • 1 cup tightly packed fresh coriander

  • 1 tsp barley grass juice powder

  • 1 tsp spirulina

  • 1 tbsp wild Atlantic dulse flakes, or 2 dropperfuls Atlantic dulse liquid

  • 1 tbsp raw honey (optional; omit if following a Heavy Metal Detox Cleanse)

  • ½ to 1 cup water, coconut water, or freshly squeezed orange juice (optional, for blending)

  • 1 banana, sliced, for topping (optional)

  • ¼ cup fresh blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries, for topping (optional)

Directions

Add the mango, blueberries (or juice/powder equivalent), strawberries (if using), coriander, barley grass juice powder, spirulina, Atlantic dulse, optional honey, and half a cup of liquid (water or coconut water), if needed, to a blender. Blend on high for at least three to five minutes until fully smooth. The mango creates a thick base, so you may need to add a little more liquid to help it blend cleanly. Pour into a bowl and add toppings immediately before serving.

Tips for Making the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Bowl

A few simple tips can help you get the best results from this recipe.

  • Use a high-speed blender to create a smooth, creamy consistency.

  • If you can’t get wild blueberries (fresh, frozen, juice, or powder), blackberries can be used as a substitute, although they don’t provide the same heavy metal detox benefits as wild blueberries.

  • If you’re following the more concentrated version of the recipe, leave out the honey and increase the spirulina, barley grass juice powder, and coriander to the recommended amounts.

  • For the best texture, serve the smoothie bowl as soon as it is prepared.
